IFAC global survey results announced

World Accountancy Week reaffirms the value of accountants to society

10 Dec 2008

The results of the 2008 Global Leadership survey conducted by the International Federation of Accountants (IFAC) to mark World Accountancy Week offer a valuable insight into the global profession, highlighting that accountancy is a good choice as a flexible career relevant to a wide range of roles and suited to people of talent and application from all backgrounds.

The key focus of the survey, which ACCA responded to along with over 100 professional accountancy bodies worldwide, was addressing the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

ACCA chief executive Helen Brand said: 'It's also timely that IFAC is proposing to include a focus on the needs of the many accountants who work outside of the Big Four firms. With 63,000 members actively working in the SME and small practice sector, ACCA is working to support those members through continuing professional development and advisory information, as well lobbying regulators and governments on behalf of the sector.

'What the survey also helps to illustrate is that accountancy is an increasingly attractive career option, all around the globe. The signs for the profession are encouraging. Growing numbers of students are currently sitting ACCA exams this December. Our challenge, particularly in the current economic climate, is to continue to show how attractive the profession remains,' said Brand.
