CPD 2009 - are you on track?
If you haven't yet completed your CPD, then the following guide will help ensure you are on track for successful completion by the end of the year.
With the 1 January deadline fast approaching, it is time for you to reflect on your CPD activity to date. If you haven't yet completed your CPD, then the following guide will help ensure you are on track for successful completion by the end of the year
Select relevant CPD activities
ACCA provides a wide range of learning and development opportunities to assist members in achieving their CPD requirement. As long as the learning undertaken is relevant to your role or career aspirations, it can count as CPD.
Learning opportunities available from ACCA include:
- e-learning - visit ACCA's E-learning Gateway for the full suite of e-learning products available directly from ACCA and our expert partners
- new technologies - take part in discussion boards via ACCA Discuss, download ACCA podcasts or watch videos on ACCA TV
- ethics resource - our extensive online ethics resource contains free e-learning modules, case studies, guidance on creating codes of conduct and guidance relating to corporate social responsibility
- face-to-face events - our events database lists details of all courses, seminars and lectures delivered through our network of national offices and further events are available from our Registered CPD Providers
- networking - join work committees and steering groups or attend ACCA networking events
- reading and research - our knowledge library contains technical updates, research reports, consultations, opinion pieces and magazine articles
- mentoring - if you work closely with an ACCA trainee and are familiar with the quality of their work, you could become their Workplace Mentor, which in turn can help you develop useful new skills.

Already meeting the requirement?
Many members have found that the activity they regularly undertake at work to maintain their professional skills and knowledge means that they are in fact exceeding ACCA's CPD requirement of 40 units per year. Remember, no matter what your learning activity is, if you can answer 'yes' to the three questions below you can record the activity as verifiable CPD.
- Was the learning activity relevant to your career?
- Can you explain how you will apply the learning in the workplace?
- Can you provide evidence that you undertook the learning activity?
Take 10 minutes to review some of the work activity you have undertaken this year where you learned something to benefit your work or career, and you may be surprised at how much of the CPD requirement you have already achieved.
Some examples of this may be:
- participating on working and project groups
- undertaking research
- being a workplace mentor
- keeping up-to-date with current and future trends
- preparing for presentations
- taking on new duties.
Providing you can demonstrate that the activity undertaken has helped you develop new skills and knowledge that are relevant to your development, then it can be counted towards your CPD requirement. And, if you have evidence to back up your learning, you may also be able to count it as verifiable CPD.
Make your annual CPD declaration by 1 January 2010
Every member is required to make a CPD declaration on an annual basis. This process is straightforward and can be made online - via your myACCA e-business account - as soon as you have fulfilled your CPD requirement. Alternatively, you can complete the paper declaration form which will be sent to you with your annual membership subscription notification in November.
Either way, you will need to make your 2009 declaration by 1 January 2010. So, if you have already completed your CPD, you are encouraged to make your declaration now and sit back and relax in the knowledge that your CPD is up to date.
