ACCA MaSRA 2009

ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) today announced UEM Environment Sdn Bhd as the overall Winner of ACCA Malaysia Sustainability Reporting Awards (ACCA MaSRA) 2009 . Seven other companies also received commendation awards and special mentions from the judges for excellence in reporting their corporate sustainability performance

ACCA MaSRA 2009 , previously known as ACCA Malaysia Environmental and Social Reporting Awards (ACCA MESRA) was first introduced in Malaysia in 2002, with the aim to encourage the uptake of sustainability (or corporate responsibility) reporting among companies in Malaysia. Through the Awards, businesses are encouraged to report on the impact of their business operations to the environment and society they operate in.

YB Dato' Wira Chor Chee Heung, Deputy Minister of Finance , Malaysia presented the awards to all the winners. ACCA MaSRA 2009 saw an increase in the quality of sustainability reporting – with more and more companies submitting stand alone reports and complying with global standards such as the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) . ACCA received 56 entries for ACCA MaSRA 2009.

Commenting on the new name of the Awards, YBhg Datuk Mohd Nasir Ahmad, President of ACCA Malaysia Advisory Committee said that, “By enlarging the Awards to embrace sustainability, ACCA hopes to encourage corporate Malaysia to examine and account for their “big picture” consequences on society, economy and environment. By focusing on sustainability reporting, organisations will be able to differentiate themselves from other reporters and this will give them the edge to compete in the global arena. ACCA has long advocated the importance of non-financial disclosure and the business benefits they bring . ”

In his speech Datuk Mohd Nasir also said that it is equally encouraging to note that previous entrants for the ACCA awards continued to report on their impacts in spite of the daunting business climate and there were a number of high-quality first-time reporters for ACCA MaSRA this year.

Globally ACCA has promoted greater transparency in the reporting of organisations' social and environmental impacts for over eighteen years. ACCA is involved in reporting awards in more than 26 countries in Europe, Africa , North America/Canada and the Asia Pacific region.

ACCA Awards around the world reward companies for excellence in sustainability reporting. The aim of the Awards is to identify and reward innovative attempts to communicate corporate performance on environmental, social and sustainability performance.

The Awards is endorsed by AccountAbility, Bursa Malaysia Berhad, Business Council for Sustainable Development in Malaysia (BCSDM) and the Department of Environment (DOE) of Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment and supported by CorporateRegister.com
