Covering letters
In many ways, getting your covering letter right is as important as producing the perfect CV. If it doesn't make an impact, your CV may never get read.
Your covering letter is the first thing that your prospective employer will see, so it should grab their attention and make an instant impression. As you only have between 10 to 20 seconds to get across what you're trying to say, keep it to one page making sure it's well structured.
Personalise each letter by linking back to the advert, but don't quote the advert verbatim. Align your achievements and attributes to the role, the company and any specific experience or qualifications that are required. Always adopt a business tone and don't use graphics or fancy fonts.
If you don't have the specific skills that the advert refers to, emphasise your other skills and as with your CV, you should quantify everything you say.
Don't underestimate the importance of excellent spelling and grammar - make sure you spend time writing, editing and re-checking. Finally, ensure you keep track of who you send your cover letter and CV to and register their response.
