Predicting an uncertain future: narrative reporting and risk information
This paper is based on a review of the annual reports of industry leaders in the UK, Germany, the US, Canada, Australia, Malaysia and Singapore.
The latest recession was a wake-up call. It showed that the system as it stands today is no longer sustainable. Despite extensive regulation and reporting standards, some of the largest banks of the last century collapsed.
The reasons for this are wide ranging, but one important aspect is the fact that shareholders of these banks, as well as those of other companies, did not have the fullest possible information about risk and business forecasts.
