The Severn Barrage - the latest position

Event: The Severn Barrage - the latest position

Professions Group Wales

Speaker : Professor Roger Falconer, School of Engineering, University of Cardiff

The Severn, which has the second-largest tidal range in the world, has the capacity to meet up to 5% of the UK's electricity needs from renewable energy but conservationists are concerned about the impact on the region's wildlife.

The 10-mile barrage recently had it's place confirmed on a shortlist of possible tidal schemes published by the Government.  A second public consultation is expected next year, when more information is known.

The issues and myths surrounding the Severn Barrage Power Project will be explored in a presentation given by Professor Roger Falconer, Halcrow Professor of Water Management and Director at the Hydro-environmental Research Centre, Cardiff School of Engineering.  He will also highlight the possible impacts of the Severn Barrage on those living and working in Cardiff and the Vale.

Professor Falconer will present his findings and views on the various options for tidal power from the Severn Estuary and will discuss the opportunities and challenges for Cardiff, Wales and the UK generally of acquiring tidal renewable energy from the Severn.
