How can countries spend less on healthcare – and achieve better outcomes?
Global research which will study why some countries have better healthcare outcomes than other comparable nations, despite the fact they spend less on health services, has been launched this month by ACCA (the Association of Chartered certified Accountants).
The year long research, to be undertaken by Roger Hay of the Oxford Policy Institute for ACCA, will set out to assess the impact which health spending and other factors have on the relationship between income and health outcomes; identify the common characteristics of good and poor performing countries; explore the extent to which the characteristics of good performing countries might be replicated elsewhere and provide practical policy recommendations
The research follows three forums in Singapore, Washington and London last year which looked at healthcare issues in developed and developing economies.
Caroline Oades, Head of Research at ACCA, said: “There is considerable evidence which shows that the level of an individual’s personal income is more important for healthiness than the amount which is spent by governments on healthcare. However, there are significant variations in health outcomes in countries with the same level of national and personal income.
“This research will look at those variations and will also aim to answer the key question of whether there are common factors associated with better health outcomes at the same level of income which might be emulated in worse performing countries,” added Caroline Oades.
