More than 160 chief financial officers from Poland and the wider Central and Eastern Europe (CEE) region attended the CFO European Summit hosted by ACCA Poland in Warsaw on 14 October.
The summit provided an opportunity for delegates from a wide variety of industry sectors to network and identify the pressing challenges facing financial managers today.
In his welcoming speech, guest of honour Dr Krzysztof Rybinski, former deputy governor of the National Bank of Poland, presented an outlook of the current economic situation in Central and Eastern Europe, and outlined the numerous economic, social, demographic, and ecological factors bringing new challenges to businesses and finance directors in particular. Notably, he warned delegates of the upcoming public debt crisis facing the world.
'So far Greece, Ireland and possibly Spain and Portugal have been saved by huge bailouts and European Central Bank (ECB) direct bond purchases,' said Dr Rybinksi. 'But one day ECB will have to stop, which will severely test market confidence in the sustainability of these countries' economic policies.'
Also speaking at the event was Roger Acton, ACCA regional director - Europe and Americas, who underlined the leading role financial managers will play in helping to rebuild companies, organisations and economies, adding that the challenge was now on to meet such high expectations.
'Much is expected of you, not only in terms of what you do, but also in terms of how you do it,' said Acton. 'I'm hopeful that our work here today will help further equip us in some small way, so that we can all play our part in meeting these expectations.'
Representatives from Coca Cola, IKEA, Thompson Reuters, Barclaycard, Avon and Save the Children International, as well as many others, took part in the panel sessions, which focused on:
- Leading and driving value - the CFO's role in value based management
- Building financial management capacity
