With businesses under ever more public scrutiny while at the same time dealing with rapid changes to the global economy, finance professionals are playing an increasingly important role at the heart of business strategy and stewardship. The challenges facing international business leaders and the skillsets which they now need from the finance function are highlighted in a special Corporate edition of Accounting and Business magazine for 2013, which also looks at how ACCA is working to meet those needs.

The publication takes the views of CFOs from leading companies around the world who talk about life in the ‘hotseat’ – including from Tata, Hong Kong Television Network, Standard Chartered Bank and CNOOC Enertech, China.

PwC International Chairman Dennis Nally writes about the need for resilience in business to withstand short term economic turbulence, while HSBC Chief Accounting Officer Russell Picot looks at the business case for diversity within an organisation.

The magazine highlights research undertaken by ACCA and IMA (the Institute of Management Accountants) which resulted in a report The Changing role of the CFO which looks at the increasing and diverse demands placed on finance leaders, while looking at ACCA’s commitment to develop the complete finance professional in response to the demands from today’s business world.

ACCA Chief Executive Helen Brand OBE also writes about the new ACCA report The complete finance professional 2013: Why breadth and depth of finance matter in today’s finance function, which used information based on an ACCA survey of nearly 500 CFOs in the UK, Malaysia, Russia, China and the UAE, and there are details about how the ACCA Qualification helps to build business leaders.

Chris Quick, Editor in Chief of Accounting and Business, said: 'With businesses under ever more public scrutiny while at the same time dealing with rapid changes to the global economy, finance professionals are playing an increasingly important role at the heart of business strategy and stewardship. This might make working life challenging, but many say it is making their careers more interesting and rewarding. The breadth and depth of accountants’ skillsets are being tested like never before.'
