Kenyan student David Mwangi had not intended to study the ACCA Qualification when starting his finance career: 'I had planned to take a local qualification,' he explains, 'but after leaving high school in 2005, I came to Nairobi to look for a suitable accountancy college and found out more about ACCA and about the opportunity to gain a BSc degree - so I went for it.'

David has been studying at Strathmore University in Nairobi since 2006 and hopes to complete his exams in 2011 - and while progressing his studies he has also been progressing his career: 'I began as an audit trainee before joining a courier firm as a credit controller, and then moved on to work for a peace charity as a project accountant,' explains David. 'In July 2010 I joined my current employer, Twin Buffalo Tours and Safaris, where I am an accountant.'

David’s responsibilities include monitoring daily bankings, updating the general ledger and cashbook, compiling various reports, and 'working hand in hand with management' to make financially-based decisions. 'This job is very different from the role of project accountant,' he comments, 'which focused more on budgeting and budgetary control, and wasn’t so busy.'

David regards his career path to date as a real learning opportunity: 'Each role has helped me learn how an accounts department works, enabling me to manage the whole department - as I now do in my current job.' ACCA also played an important role in his career development, he adds: 'ACCA students and affiliates are known for their wider skills and their excellent performance, and so my ACCA studies definitely helped me gain my current job.'

With so much work experience behind him, David is on track to gain membership soon after successfully completing his exams and is looking forward to the benefits he knows it will bring, especially in terms of contact with other ACCA members: 'I consider networking to be essential for career development,' he says, 'and as an ACCA member I will be able to access significant networking opportunities which will help me grow as a professional.'
