ACCA student Dionne Deane dreams of working in the hotel sector of Las Vegas.

Q. What personal skills have you developed as a result of studying for your ACCA exams?

A. My time management skills have vastly improved. Time management became a necessity for me rather than an option due to the fact that I have a full-time job, which can be demanding.

Q. What kept you motivated during your studies?

A. I passed all my exams very convincingly on my first attempt and what kept me motivated was the promise I made to myself back in 2008. I promised myself that by the age of 25 I would be a qualified accountant and I would pass all my exams on first attempt. I knew it would be a challenge but I love a good challenge!

Q. What words of advice would you give to students who are struggling?

A. Take a step back and reassess your current exam approach. I found that my success in exams stemmed from me practising a lot of past paper questions because I learn from making mistakes. I also strived to understand and follow closely what was going on in my classes; I never left class until I understood everything. I find that too many students strive to regurgitate and learn answers rather than understand what they are doing.

Q. What is your dream job?

A. I would love to gain some international audit experience in the US, namely in the hotel and leisure industry in Vegas. Vegas is the home to some of the largest hotels in the world.
