Together with Professions for Good members, ACCA is also pleased to support the Common Best Practice Code for High Quality Internships, which was also recently announced.
Andrew Leck, head of ACCA UK, said: 'Professions for Good represents more than 750,000 professionals worldwide, including members from the legal, accountancy, property and engineering professions. ACCA supports this initiative because we believe it offers an important opportunity for the professions to promote our role in society and the economy. The professions clearly have a part to play in the social mobility agenda, by removing artificial barriers to becoming a professional. ACCA is proud to have been open and accessible to people who want to be professional accountants since our inception in 1904.'
Helen Brand, chief executive of ACCA, spoke at the event on Monday 18 July, and said of Professions for Good: 'This is an important new initiative by the professions. By working together we can demonstrate the public value that professional bodies and their members bring to economy and society alike. Importantly, as a group, we are committed to promoting the highest standards of quality and ethics among all professionals in keeping with a wider goal of responsible business in society. This launch is just the beginning of a long and fruitful campaign, and ACCA looks forward to working with diverse professional bodies in pursuit of our common goals.'
Earlier this year, ACCA also signed up to the Government’s Social Mobility Compact pledge, which seeks to improve opportunities for people across society, particularly through learning, work experience and career opportunities.
Andrew Leck concludes: 'One specific way in which we widen access to the professions is through ACCA’s new Foundations in Accountancy suite of awards, which was launched in January 2011. This includes our established Certified Technician Qualification. This is available to people irrespective of their formal prior qualifications. The new suite of awards has been developed in response to employers’ needs to have more flexibility in the way they develop their people. It is also in keeping with our philosophy of providing encouragement to people to continue their learning all the way to professional level and beyond. Interestingly, nearly 50% of our 87,000 or so UK students are non-graduates.
'ACCA is also working with a number of employers around the world who are seeking to enhance their record in diversity and we actively promote ACCA’s qualifications as a means for employers to widen their talent pool. Foundations in Accountancy is eligible for funding in the UK through the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QFC), so Further Education colleges can draw-down funding to teach towards the exams.'
