Why did you become a workplace mentor?
I wanted to give back for the opportunities ACCA has provided me with and help an aspiring ACCA student achieve their goals and ambitions.
Name a highlight of being a workplace mentor
It is incredibly rewarding seeing your trainee achieve their personal goals and ambitions while contributing and adding value to the organisation and, ultimately, the profession as a whole.
How do you think being a workplace mentor has developed your coaching and mentoring skills?
Greatly. Just ‘telling’ someone what to do is not long-lasting and doesn’t encourage empowerment or accountability. Through coaching and mentoring, you can help your trainee figure it out for themselves, thereby greatly enhancing their confidence and ability to problem solve.
What benefits do you feel you being a workplace mentor has had on your career prospects/development opportunities?
It enhanced my coaching and mentoring skills, which I use on a daily basis in my work. It also sets you apart from the crowd if you’re seeking promotional opportunities and shows you have something about you when you are actively helping others to succeed.
Do you think being a workplace mentor is valuable to mentor and not just the student?
Absolutely. As I say, it’s very rewarding and fulfilling and therefore there's plenty of ‘feel-good factor’. Their high standards and energy kept me on my toes and ensured I did my best for them and was a strong role model.
Do you feel that being a workplace mentor has opened up new thinking for your own career development? If so, how?
Definitely. I sought a mentor myself and continue to do so as I realise the great benefits that mentoring can bring.
What advice would you pass on to other ACCA members who are thinking about becoming workplace mentors?
Definitely do it! You won’t regret it. It does take some commitment but you will get as much out of it as you put into it.
