China (Shanghai) - Sustainability - Global challenges; Global standards

ACCA Thought Leadership Forum: Sustainability - global challenges; global standards

Monday, 22 September 2008
JW Marriott Hotel Shanghai

A conference which will tackle the critical issue of how countries can balance economic growth with the need to protect the environment for future generations is to take place in Shanghai on 22 September.

An outstanding list of business speakers from China and Europe will take part in the conference, entitled Sustainability - Global Challenges, Global Standards, which has been organised by ACCA, the global body for professional accountants.

The event, at the JW Marriott Hotel, Shanghai, will include presentations on Global standards: the business benefits; Better City, Better Life; A Responsible BP in China; Green - create profit and social responsibilities; Climate change reporting - the new challenge for business, followed by a panel discussion.

ACCA has pioneered sustainability reporting for nearly 20 years, and now runs Sustainability Reporting Awards programmes across the world. It is involved in reporting awards with partners across Asia, Africa, Europe and North America. Last year in Hong Kong, former US Vice President and Nobel prize winner, Al Gore, spoke on climate change at an ACCA ethics and sustainability event.

ACCA has always contributed to the sustainability debate, with an aim to promote transparency in reporting and practice. ACCA believes accountants have an important role to play in measuring and reporting the environmental impacts of organisations. By measuring and reporting on issues such as pollution or energy use, accountants enable their organisations to then manage those issues more effectively, reduce waste and, in turn, help the environment and the communities in which they operate.

ACCA has promoted greater transparency in the reporting of organisations' social and environmental impacts for over fifteen years. ACCA is involved in reporting awards in more than 20 countries in Europe, Africa, North America/Canada and the Asia Pacific region.

ACCA President Richard Aitken-Davies, who will be speaking at the event said: “The accountancy profession around the world needs to be alive to the challenge of sustainability and constantly examine what it can do to influence better business behaviour.  I hope this conference enables us to make a meaningful contribution to this."
