Leadership Development

Module Description

Organisations are increasingly operating in turbulent, dynamic and global environments where change and complexity are the norm. In this context, effective leadership of organisations is imperative, at all levels. This module establishes the importance of leadership, its impact on gaining commitment from people and on business performance. Leadership Development is designed to enhance students leadership capabilities by providing an understanding of effective leadership and by developing self awareness of their leadership styles and the impact of their behaviour.

The Leadership Development module aims to provide an understanding of leadership at all levels in organisations and within a global context, understanding how it contributes to organisational effectiveness; develop sensitivity to diversity, context and ethical dilemmas and enable students to increase their leadership capabilities. By the conclusion of the module students will have a process for managing their leadership development throughout their career.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the module, students should be able to:

  • Identify the impact of leadership on organisational performance.
  • Critically reflect on, and develop self awareness of their leadership capabilities.
  • Identify a range of leadership styles, and critically evaluate the benefits and limitations of each.
  • Use feedback from others to enhance their understanding of their leadership preferences, style, and behaviour.
  • Accurately observe the behaviour of others and give descriptive feedback to promote the development of others.
  • Critically evaluate their own leadership strengths and limitations and produce action plans for increasing leadership effectiveness in a range of contexts.

Indicative Content

  • The nature of leadership: its relationship to business performance and organisational success in a global context. Transactional /transformational leadership, cultural influences on leadership, emotional intelligence and leadership, the leader as a change agent.
  • Developing self awareness: identifying the influences on behaviour, understanding individual differences.
  • Interpersonal behaviour: communicating effectively using key skills such as listening giving and receiving feedback; understanding the need for congruence of verbal and non verbal behaviours, impression management recognising and managing cultural differences.
  • Power and influence: understanding sources of power and influencing strategies, skills and behaviours.
  • Managing conflict: identifying sources of conflict and styles of conflict resolution.
  • The influence of values and ethics on leadership behaviour.
  • Leading and developing teams: the nature of teams, working with and exploiting differences in teams, developing and leading high performing teams.
  • The role of the leader in empowering and motivating others; developing and communicating visions.
  • Coaching: the role and nature of coaching, the leader as a coach.
  • Managing leadership development:, planning and reviewing behaviour change.
