Introduction

In the fast-moving world of taxation, businesses look to the tax professional to provide direction through their deep technical knowledge and application of this to practical scenarios. The ITP qualification provides an opportunity for ACCA members to demonstrate this excellence in the field of taxation, across a breadth of tax topics.

ITP is:

  • Professional – designed by tax professionals for tax professionals
  • Flexible – a variety of study routes are available
  • Relevant – constantly reviewed to ensure the syllabus is up-to-date and relevant
  • Consistent – the examination style and content matches the teaching material.

Those completing the qualification will be entitled to use the designation ‘ITP’ after their name and will be affiliated to ICAS, on payment of an annual fee.

Overview

ITP is relevant to tax professionals developing their knowledge and skills in the early stages of their tax career, and also those who have been working in tax for some time and wish to consolidate their skills and knowledge.  The qualification is made up of seven assessments over three levels:

Level 1 – Principles
The three assessments at this level cover Financial Accounting, Business Law and Principles of Taxation. These provide the foundation on which to build deep technical tax knowledge. Examinations can be taken online at any time.

Level 2 – Skills and Advice
This level concentrates on technical knowledge and application of this across three subject areas – Taxation of Individuals, Taxation of Companies and Indirect Taxation. A copy of the syllabus is included within ‘related documents’ below, along with a copy of some sample material for this level, showing the approach taken in the notes.

Level 3 – Expertise
Drawing on all knowledge and skills from the earlier levels, the Test of Professional Tax Expertise allows the candidate to demonstrate their ability to provide relevant, technical advice to a client through a case study approach. Candidates will be introduced to material that integrates all previous knowledge, and the final assessment will allow the candidate to demonstrate a practical approach to problem-solving for a client.

ACCA members will be completely exempt from the initial three assessments of the qualification and will be able to begin from Level 2.

Studying for ITP

Examinations for Level 2 are held twice a year in April and September, and the majority of candidates attempt one or two papers at one time, allowing approximately six months for study of these subjects. The material has been developed in conjunction with tax training experts, Tolley. Candidates have complete access to online material including the Tolley Academy with clear and straightforward online lectures with worked examples, and a forum to share questions and queries with fellow students and your tutors. A full set of hard copy notes is also provided. This course is both flexible and affordable.

Classroom and/or online live tuition is also available, along with revision courses, allowing you to build a package of tuition that best suits your learning style and available time.
