The 2009 Awards
The deadline for entry to the ACCA UK 2009 Sustainability Reporting Awards was on 11 July 2009. After a disappointingly low number of entries, ACCA felt that it is not viable to run a credible awards scheme with such a small sample size, because it is an unfair reflection of the UK reporting scene. After extensive internal discussion, ACCA has therefore decided to cancel the Awards for 2009, with a view to reconsidering its situation for 2010. ACCA is not decreasing its commitment to reporting and transparency, but will be developing alternative projects which we feel better serve the reporting community. In terms of external partnerships, ACCA still has close involvement with the work of the GRI, with representation on its technical advisory committee, we have been part of the Prince of Wales Accounting for Sustainability project since its initiation and we sit on the Climate Disclosure Standards Board which is developing a common framework for carbon reporting.
In terms of project work specifically on reporting, ACCA is going to continue with its ‘theme’ work, which was introduced as part of the UK Awards scheme in order to look at state of disclosure on specific issues in more detail. ACCA and WWF UK are carrying out research on UK water disclosures, which will be published in early 2010, based on high impact sectors of the FTSE100. This ‘theme’ work will become a stand-alone annual project. There will also be an annual reporting event held in January 2010, which will replace the awards ceremony usually held in December. This first one will be held in January 2010 and is planned to be a half day forum/workshop and will draw on a selection of relevant reporting issues.
Additional ACCA projects areas which we plan to focus on are as follows:
• Electronic reporting techniques
• Narrative reporting research
• Carbon Accountancy Futures Theme
• Sustainability Friday Forums
• The Water Jigsaw
• Member briefing papers on climate change
• Preparation for the run up to COP15 in December 2009
ACCA will be deciding the future of the Awards in early 2010. A Q&A sheet can be downloaded from the ‘Related Documents’ section of this page, which should answer any questions you may have.
