Course overview

The Oxford Brookes Global MBA begins with an induction programme to ensure that you understand fully the rigours of MBA study and to equip you with the key study skills required to succeed.

You will be encouraged to take stock of your career up to this point, undertaking an honest self-audit, in which you appraise your personal development and professional career path. 

There is a range of core compulsory modules:

  • Personal and Professional Development (includes induction, programme support and summative action plan)
  • Critical Approaches to Business
  • Global Business Environment
  • Developing Leadership Capability
  • Market Supply and Analysis
  • Entrepreneurial Behaviours and Practices
  • Global Strategy and Innovation
  • Integrated Workshop 1 (residential four day workshop)
  • Integrated Workshop 2 (residential four day workshop)
  • Final MBA Project

The Personal and Professional Development module begins in your induction, during which you prepare a Personal and Professional Development Journal. The module culminates in an assessed Action Plan for your career development. The Critical Approaches to Business module helps you develop the critical thinking and research skills needed for MBA study. 

After the core modules, you choose one elective modules which enable you to follow a specialist pathway through the MBA.

For the final stage of your programme you choose an MBA project. This can be a dissertation, an individual consultancy project, a group consultancy project or a business start-up plan.* This final project connects the knowledge and expertise you have gained throughout the programme and gives you the opportunity to pursue an area of interest in depth.

*To choose the business start-up plan you will need to have completed the elective Planning for New Business Ventures. 

Foundations of Management

This module will give you a broad understanding of management processes, as well as the needs and contexts of organisations. You will also learn about how the main business functions contribute to an organisation's success.

As well as giving an understanding of organisations in general, the module covers the specialist areas of marketing, operations management and information management. The fourth component of this module is organisational analysis. As well as providing a framework for analysing organisations, this teaches you how to integrate and apply your learning from other parts of the module.

The Foundation module includes operational and strategic content to provide you with a platform for the study of strategic management later in the course:

Foundations of Management Part A

Marketing

You will learn about the principles and concepts of marketing. You will also develop the ability to apply these marketing principles to a variety of organisational and business settings.

Operations and Process Management

Operations Management is about managing the processes of an enterprise to deliver services, produce goods or to satisfy customer needs. But managers in other functions, such as sales or finance, also manage processes. In fact, organisations are built around processes that supply both internal and external customers. Effective process management is central to an organisation's competitiveness and long-term success.

Studying this component will mean you develop an understanding of effective process management suitable for middle and senior managers. This component will be useful whether your organisation provides products or services and whether you work in the private, public or not-for-profit sectors.

Foundations of Management Part B

Strategic Information Management

Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) are now present throughout all modern organisations. IS/IT is used not only to increase efficiency and effectiveness but can, in some cases, transform organisations. IS/IT is increasingly a major part of implementing strategy and makes strategic options available that weren't in the past. You will be able to make sense of Information Systems (IS) and Information Technology (IT) in real-world organisational contexts by studying this part of the module.

You will develop an understanding of how IS and IT impact on an organisation's objectives, business processes and management. The module will help you to contribute to discussions and improve communication between managers and IT professionals. You'll also gain a better understanding of how IS and IT can contribute to an organisation's efficiency and effectiveness.

Organisational Analysis

By studying this component you will develop the ability to analyse organisations - their design and how individuals communicate and learn within them. You will apply your learning from previous parts of this module in this analysis.

Leadership Development

Organisations are operating in constantly changing global environments. This means that effective leadership of these organisations is important at all levels. The Leadership Development module establishes the importance of leadership, its impact on gaining commitment from people and impact on business performance. This module will enhance your leadership skills by providing an understanding of effective leadership, and by developing your awareness of your leadership style and the impact of your behaviour.

Learning outcomes

When you have successfully completed the module, you should be able to:

  • identify the impact of leadership on an organisation's performance
  • reflect on and develop self-awareness of your leadership capabilities
  • identify a range of leadership styles and critically evaluate the benefits and limitations of each
  • use feedback from others to improve your understanding of your leadership preferences, style and behaviour
  • observe the behaviour of others and give feedback to promote their development
  • produce action plans for increasing leadership effectiveness in a range of contexts.

Global Business Strategy

In today's international business world, people from all organisations have to understand the trends shaping the global business environment. They must also understand the strategies that businesses have to adopt in order to deal with the challenges of an increasingly competitive marketplace. This module will help you to understand these trends and strategies.

The module also covers topics such as doing business in international markets, managing global supply chains and supervising a diverse workforce.

Learning outcomes

When you have successfully completed the module, you should be able to:

  • evaluate different approaches to strategy
  • assess the resources needed by an organisation to develop and implement strategy
  • identify the forces shaping national and global business environments
  • recognise the importance of organisational culture and national culture in the development of business strategies worldwide
  • understand how the different activities of an organisation are interconnected and how they impact on the development of strategy
  • devise and evaluate potential strategies for commercial and not-for-profit organisations
  • appreciate the issues involved in implementing a strategy
  • explore issues associated with business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

Organisational Innovation and Change

You will learn about the management of change and innovation in this module. It focuses on the strategy of managing people, and how to create support for innovation and change. It draws on current debates and research, and explores the importance of Strategic Human Resource Management within the context of broader corporate strategy.

It will provide an opportunity for you to bring a wide range of perspectives together in your evaluation. This module will teach you the conceptual skills for managing people through periods of major change.

Learning outcomes

When you have successfully completed the module, you should be able to:

  • identify the key drivers that bring about innovation and change
  • critically evaluate the role of human resource management in an organisation's success
  • recognise different approaches to innovation, change and creativity. You should also be able to apply and critically evaluate these approaches
  • identify attempts to bring about effective organisational change and transformation in both national and international contexts.

Research Methods and Dissertation/Individual Consultancy Project

You can either complete the Research Methods and Dissertation module or an Individual Consultancy Project.

Research Methods and Dissertation module

The Research Methods and Dissertation module provides students with the opportunity to explore an area of interest within strategic management in greater depth.

When you have successfully completed the module, you should be able to:

  • recognise and evaluate different business and management research designs
  • develop a structured programme of research, based on informed choices about research designs, techniques and procedures
  • conduct research in a systematic, thorough and analytical way
  • assess and put together data from a wide variety of sources
  • identify your skills and where you could develop further.

Individual Consultancy Project

The Individual Consultancy Project allows students to work on a specific project for an organisation of their choice. You would be expected to find this organisation yourself and it would usually be an organisation that you are already familiar with.

The project would allow you to develop similar research and project management skills to the Dissertation module, but in a real-world environment.

When you have successfully completed the module, you should be able to:

  • engage with a client organisation with the aim of investigating a current business or management problem
  • use a structured programme of research that incorporates a variety of consultancy tools and evaluates different business and management research designs
  • put together data from a wide variety of sources in order to evaluate client problems and issues
  • present the consultancy findings in a format acceptable to the client
  • identify your skills and where you could develop further.
