What is an IT systems specialist and what do they do?

IT systems specialists develop, maintain and support an organisation's IT systems, such as computer hardware, software, video conferencing, networks and database systems. They are also responsible for implementing security protocols

IT systems specialists will develop and implement solutions to network issues, system administration problems and application errors, as well as monitoring systems in order to identify potential system errors. In addition, they will assess factors such as compatibility, usability and cost in order to determine the best use of technology.

Key responsibilities

Responsibilities will vary, but examples include:

  • Install, manage and maintain all system hardware and software throughout the organisation, resolving problems where necessary
  • Evaluate and recommend improvements, modifications or changes to an organisation’s IT systems to reduce costs and upgrade the systems
  • Perform regular maintenance on software & associate ancillary equipment to maintain optimal efficiency
  • Design and document all security measures and standards for all computer software and hardware
  • Develop and maintain Intranet and Internet web sites
  • Ensure periodic system backups are performed
  • Provide regular status reports to management
  • Provide technical support, training, and direction to staff to ensure effective use of systems
  • Maintain subject matter expertise in all applications for systems and maintain knowledge on all new and upcoming technologies
