Morale-boosting exercise circles the Earth

Accountants stick together for marathon Walk/Run/Ride adventure

ACCA members have run, walked and cycled around the world to stay healthy, happy and connected during the pandemic.

They covered a combined total of 46,512km – enough to circumnavigate the Earth with plenty to spare – in the four-month marathon.

Members joined in by jogging, riding, strolling, swimming, skating, climbing stairs and hiking and shared their progress worldwide via an exercise app.

One of the organisers of the Global Walk/Run/Ride, Belinda Young from Singapore, said: ‘We came up with the idea as a way to bring people around the world together at a time when we have been separated by the pandemic. Our motto was Stay Local Go Global.

‘We were keen to promote health, and to unite members, students and staff in a spirit of fun and friendship. It was also a great way of underlining ACCA’s purpose: to be a force for public good.

‘We are thrilled that the idea has caught on and encouraged so many people to take part.’

ACCA Council member Liz Blackburn, from Scotland, also helped organise the event. She said: ‘I knew it was a wonderful idea the first time it was mentioned. It has given us a great chance to celebrate our global community and to join together in friendship despite physical distancing and travel bans, while also supporting a higher purpose.

‘I loved hearing all the stories and seeing all the wonderful pictures from activities across the world. It is especially thrilling to hear from people who added the Walk/Ride/Run into their exercise routine and also from those who have dug their running shoes out of the closet for the first time in years to take part.’

The event ran for 116 days and ended on ACCA’s 116th anniversary. It raised US$4,935 for the World Health Organisation’s Covid-19 Solidarity Fund.
