ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) Hong Kong successfully held its virtual ACCA Hong Kong Tax Conference 2023 last Saturday. Under the theme ‘Accounting for a better world: Regaining resilience and vibrancy that define Hong Kong’s future’, the event has invited Joseph Chan, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the HKSAR, as the keynote speaker, while gathering elites from the accounting and finance industry to share insights on helping Hong Kong’s economy to regain growth momentum and vibrancy.

As a global professional accountancy body, ACCA has been playing a leading role in the profession with international coverage and vision. ACCA Hong Kong is also dedicated to providing support for its members and maintaining a close relationship with different government departments, offering timely recommendations for the growth of the profession and the public interest of society. As a flagship event of ACCA as well as the local accounting industry, the ACCA Tax Conference provides a platform for idea exchange and interaction for accounting professionals. Sponsored by Deloitte, EY, KPMG, and PwC, this year’s conference featured guest speakers sharing on a diverse array of themes, including ‘Attracting global businesses and talents to Hong Kong’, ‘Overview of Hong Kong’s tax updates’, ‘Tax implications and challenges for Hong Kong businesses’, and ‘Emerging tax issues and opportunities for Hong Kong’.

Joseph Chan, Under Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury of the HKSAR, said in his keynote speech, ‘The HKSAR Government has been putting emphasis on helping the accounting and finance industry and Hong Kong’s economy to regain vibrancy. Thanks to the joint effort of accounting professionals for decades, Hong Kong, as an international financial centre, has maintained a good global reputation and investor confidence. While the Government is placing great importance on the development of the local accounting industry, I would also like to take this opportunity to express my sincere gratitude to ACCA, for its long-term commitment to nurturing local talents and enhancing the professional standard of the industry, contributing to Hong Kong’s development as Asia’s leading financial centre.’

Winnie Ki, Chairman of ACCA Hong Kong, said in her welcome speech, ‘In today’s ever-changing business environment, ACCA Tax Conference gathers elites from the profession to share their valuable insights, providing new inspiration and information for us to overcome the future obstacles. Over the past three years, various anti-pandemic measures have weakened the attractiveness of Hong Kong. In order to compete for enterprises and talents, it is necessary for us to raise our competitiveness by strengthening the tax system to improve the business environment.
