Technical factsheet: charitable incorporated organisations

The CIO structure aims to provide charities with some of the benefits of being a company, without the additional reporting and legal requirements to which charitable companies are subject. The CIO is an incorporated structure that can only be used by charities; it is not a liable. The CIO has an equivalent in Scotland in the Scottish charitable incorporated organisation (SCIO), which has been available since 2011.
