There are 3 primary areas of work for a treasury professional:
- cash management - the optimisation of a company's liquidity and make sound financial investments to ensure that the business has the money it needs to pay its bills or undertake new ventures
- risk management - to identify, assess and manage any risks taken by the business to support business objectives
- corporate finance - to determine potential sources of funding and assist with the financial strategy that the company will use to meet overall business objectives.
Larger organisations will usually have their own treasury departments, which are overseen by a treasurer. In smaller organisations, the treasury role is largely undertaken by the chief financial officer or finance director.
