Global body places ethics at the heart of accountancy
ACCA (the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) has called on Chinese educators to join it in nurturing the next generation of ethical accountants the world needs.
Alan Hatfield, ACCA executive director – strategy and development, told an audience at Northeastern University, Shenyang, China:
‘Our work as educators is informed by the knowledge that a sound understanding of and commitment to the highest ethical standards must be built into the education of every future professional.
‘No individual can truly be said to possess a rounded, functional and socially useful professional education without a robust ethical framework supporting everything they have learned and know.’
Mr Hatfield, guest keynote speaker at the Greater China Educators’ Forum, said that ACCA was the first professional accountancy body in the world to build the study of ethical practice into its Qualification. It has created an award-winning online resource – the Ethics and Professional Skills Module – which allows students to react and respond to actual-world ethical dilemmas in real time.
No student can qualify with ACCA until they have passed the module.
Mr Hatfield praised ACCA’s learning partners across China for their work in building the accountancy profession in the country. He said:
‘We rely utterly on the fruitful cooperation we enjoy with our partners from learning providers, and on the support and creative collaboration of colleagues at high-achieving and forward-looking academic institutions of learning right across China.
‘Your contribution and commitment to our common cause is admired, valued and appreciated by everybody at ACCA.
‘Without your experience and dedication, we would not have grown into an organisation which unites more than 219,000 members and half a million students in 179 countries across the world. So let me say a sincere thank you for all your efforts, and long may our important and worthwhile work together flourish and prosper.’
