1 Mobile qualification
More than many other professions, accountancy can act as a perfect passport. As markets globalise and economies unlock, organisations need finance managers with an international outlook. Practical ability and recognised qualifications open more doors internationally than knowledge of a language, and opportunities for those wishing to export their skills have never been better. Accountants who have worked abroad will also be in demand if or when they decide to return home.
2 Global connection
Most large recruitment agencies have divisions that specialise in placing candidates abroad, and they’re often first to know about vacancies. However, knowing where firms are trading or setting up internationally means you can apply speculatively under your own steam. Monitor business websites in your target countries. It’s also useful to contact local personnel departments of organisations in your own country, as they’re often also responsible for recruiting abroad.
3 Know your stuff
Before your CV speeds off round the world, there are other issues to consider. For instance, the Caribbean is ideal for single people, the Middle East is incredibly family-friendly, the US has strict working visa requirements for partners. You’ll need local language fluency for some western European countries, while many in eastern Europe may only require good English. And each firm’s academic or exam record criteria will differ across borders. Research your global options thoroughly.
