ACCA Qualification recognition

ACCA members and students living in the United States have found many pathways to success, but it is one of the more difficult markets for members to break into.

The national qualification, the US CPA, is required to practice public accounting in the US.

Currently, ACCA does not have a mutual recognition agreement with the International Qualifications Appraisal Board (IQAB), a joint body between National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) or the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA).

Education evaluation

Depending on the purpose of your education evaluation, some evaluation organisations are the preferred organisation.

A listing of foreign credential evaluation services are listed through the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services website (NACES) website. Also refer to:

Check with the State Board of Accountancy or educational institute to help determine which evaluation organisation to choose.

When seeking an education evaluation, we recommend that you submit a copy of the ACCA syllabus with your application, as well as information concerning ACCA’s Recognition.

Accounting and finance qualifications and certifications

Should you wish to pursue additional education to aid in your skill development, there are many organisations offering highly regarded and specialised qualifications and certifications, in addition to your ACCA qualification.

  • US Certified Public Accountant (CPA)

Awarding body: Individual U.S. State Boards of Accountancy

The CPA is the most popular qualification in the USA for professional accountants. Many of our members have sat and passed the CPA. Currently, ACCA does not have a mutual recognition agreement with the International Qualifications Appraisal Board (IQAB), a joint body between National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA) or the American Institute of CPAs (AICPA)

To learn more about sitting for the US CPA qualification, AICPA has developed a resource for prospective students. This resource will help guide you through the process of earning your CPA if you are interested in pursuing it. In order to earn your CPA qualification, an individual must have at least 150 credit hours from an accredited college or university, pass a series of exams, and meet experience and ethics requirements. If you completed your education outside of an accredited US-based college or university, you will need to have your education evaluated to determine how many US-equivalent credit hours you have. These evaluations are conducted on a case-by-case basis.

ACCA does have a relationship with the University of London (UoL) and for those members who have received their ACCA within five years, you will be able to sit the online UoL MSc program. The number of credit hours you can gain from this program varies on a case-by-case basis. To learn more, visit our qualifications section.

For more information on state requirements to sit the CPA, please contact the State Board of Accountancy for which you would like more information. AICPA has created a website to learn more about the individual state board’s requirements

  • How do I obtain a US CPA?

Unfortunately, there is no quick route for ACCA members to obtain the US CPA.

In order to obtain your US CPA qualification, you will need to sit for the CPA exam and pass the four-part exam.  The CPA is administered on the state level, so to begin your journey to get the US CPA by selecting the state where you wish to be licensed. Most individuals choose to be licensed in the state in which they live. Once you select your state, contact the State Board of Accountancy for additional details on their requirements. They will advise on what coursework you will need to have taken in order to sit for the exam.

If you have been educated outside of the United States, you will need to have your education evaluated by a foreign credential evaluation services.

  • Can I continue to study ACCA in the USA?

Pace University in NYC may be willing to work with your background towards their master’s program in accountancy. Please contact them at intladm@pace.edu.

  • Do you have a list of Foreign Credential Evaluation Services?

Members and students often use foreign credential evaluation services to determine equivalency for sitting the CPA. The result varies from person to person and the service as well, but often the ACCA qualification is not found to be 150 hours on its own. We cannot comment on specific cases but the ACCA North America office has developed an orientation guide that can help members and students interested in moving to the USA. It talks about the evaluation services and which ones are most frequently used by members in the USA. Please request this guide by emailing north.america@accaglobal.com.

A member suggested sending along the course syllabi for each of the exams completed. This may give the evaluator additional information on what is covered throughout the ACCA exams. They can be found in the student community.
