From technician to strategist
The biggest challenge to scaling your practice is often how you think about growth.
To successfully scale a practice, it needs to be transformed so that it doesn't depend on any one individual - including the practice owner. Key aspects of that transformation include:
- Shifting from a "business operator" mindset to a "business owner" mindset. A business operator feels that everything depends on them and they try to do everything themselves. A business owner, by contrast, focuses on the future: systemisation, delegation, being selective about the right clients on the right services at the right price, and building capacity.
- Defining a business vision that aligns with your personal goals. Vision is more than just revenue. It includes how many clients you want, the average fees you're aiming for, and the mix of services you want to deliver (compliance versus advisory, growth, wealth services, etc)
- Moving away from everything running through you to a structured team. This means building a team-based model - such as client managers supported by delivery teams - so that you are no longer the bottleneck in client relationships
- Identifying your core values and building a team that shares those values
- Standardising and systemising recurring tasks. Start with a few quick wins to build momentum.
Together, strong team culture, effective systemisation and clearly packaged services not only support scaling up but also significantly increase the sale value of your practice when it comes time to exit.
