From DipIFR to ACCA: Islam Ismail's ACCA journey

We catch up with Islam Ismail to hear how he advanced from DipIFR to ACCA while balancing a busy full-time finance career.

Student story. Mohamed ElSaadany

Please introduce yourself. Where are you from and what do you do in life now?

My name is Islam Ismail. I graduated from the Faculty of Commerce (English section) , Helwan University. I became a DipIFR holder in June 2019 and an ACCA member in February 2024. Currently, I am a Financial Manager in the Consolidated Financial Statements Department at one of the largest banks in Egypt.

Why did you choose to pursue a career in finance?

A career in finance gives me broad opportunities in various industries (banking, auditing, etc) since every organization relies on its finance function. In other words, it is vital for every business. A job in the finance and accounting field is not a routine job, as there is always something new to learn.

Why did you decide to start your ACCA journey? What were your goals, dreams, and aspirations then?

I started ACCA to become a finance professional with strong technical knowledge and the confidence to add value to my career.

Why did you choose to pursue ACCA Qualification after completing DipIFR?

After becoming a DipIFR holder, I wanted a broader qualification that would help me achieve my goals. I wanted to gain deeper knowledge and practical skills that would support me in my work and strengthen my position in the job market. Through my research, I found that ACCA offers extensive coverage in areas such as Financial Management, Strategic Business Leader, and Strategic Business Reporting. The exam structure also motivated me, as it emphasizes true understanding rather than memorization. Additionally, the exemptions I received made the journey easier.

Take me to the moment when you realized that your hard work obtaining ACCA Qualification had eventually started paying off?

I realized that my hard work in obtaining the ACCA Qualification had started paying off when I joined the Consolidated Financial Statements team in the organization I work for. I was able to understand tasks quickly and apply my knowledge directly to my work, and my contributions were recognized. This enhanced my position and built trust in my knowledge within the team. It proved that my hard work had given me practical skills and professional credibility that added real value.

What were the biggest challenges on your ACCA journey?

The main challenge was balancing work and studies, but it taught me time management, which is now a key strength in my career.

How did you overcome them?

I overcame these challenges by creating a clear study plan and sticking to it with discipline. I divided my time between work and study, setting realistic goals for each week. Whenever I felt demotivated, I reminded myself of the moment I would become an ACCA member. That thought kept me on track.

Tell me how ACCA Qualification has helped you in your career so far? What does your life as an ACCA member look like?

The ACCA Qualification has helped me significantly in my career by giving me both technical knowledge and practical skills that I can apply directly at work. It has also given me professional credibility, which helped me build trust with colleagues and opened the door to new opportunities. Life as an ACCA member means being part of a respected global community, staying committed to continuous learning, and always striving to add value wherever I work. It gives me pride and confidence in my career path.

Would you recommend DipIFR holders to get ACCA Qualification? If so, why?

Yes, for sure, it’s highly recommended. Becoming an ACCA member is definitely a career booster as it has global recognition. It’s an investment that pays off in opportunities, credibility, and career progression.

If you could give a single most important piece of advice to current ACCA students or those who haven’t decided to register for ACCA yet, what would it be?

For ACCA students, my advice is to keep going without stopping. Stay consistent, and you will realize that all your hard work will pay off in the end. For those who haven’t decided to register yet, I would say that the market is very competitive. If you want to stand out and have opportunities with large companies, ACCA is one of the best ways to prepare yourself.
