Employers will welcome new government guidance, ‘Employer guidance: helping people return to work’, aimed at helping them encourage workers who have taken a break back to work.
The new guidance follows the announcement of the government’s ‘Returnerships’ programme in the Spring Budget 2023, intended to improve access to retraining and to help workers return to work or start a second career.
The guidance includes tips for designing and implementing a returner programme, and engaging and on-boarding returners, such as the type of employment contract that may attract workers back, adaptations to the normal recruitment process to attract more returners, work experience and access to a support network.
The guidance particularly addresses workers who have left their paid jobs to become a carer (the majority of whom are women) and how employers can show they support women and promote gender inclusivity, and potential returners of different ages.
Employers can view the guidance on the GOV.UK website.
