Keeping your CPD evidence
Keep a record of your CPD for three years*, just in case it’s needed for a CPD review.
To help you with your record-keeping, we've pulled together guidance on recording your CPD and recording tools and examples.
We've provided a handy document on what to do if you're selected for CPD review as well as information for CPD for practising members.
* Members who are Responsible Individuals (Statutory Auditors) or sustainability assurance service providers in Ireland and individuals who are partners or directors or agents of a firm holding an ACCA Irish auditing certificate must keep a record of their CPD activities for six years. Registered tax practitioners in South Africa must keep a record of their CPD activities for five years.
Guidance on recording your CPD
How you record your CPD varies depending on the route chosen.
-
Unit route
Ensure that you keep comprehensive evidence of your verifiable CPD units, as well as a record of your non-verifiable CPD.
For your verifiable CPD, your records should show:
- why you chose the activity;
- what you’ve learned from it; and
- how you have/will apply the learning.
You can record your CPD activities within your CPD recording tool which is available in the Professional Development area of your myACCA account.
Alternatively, if you’d prefer to keep records in your own format or your employer’s, please ensure that you still say why you chose the activity, what you learned and how you have/will apply the learning.
-
Unit route - part-time or semi-retired
Ensure that you keep:
- a summary of your non-verifiable CPD;
- evidence of your verifiable CPD; and
- a note of why you think your verifiable CPD is relevant and adequate for your role.
Also provide evidence of the number of hours worked, along with confirmation that you’re working in a role that meets our part-time/semi-retired route conditions.
-
ACCA approved employer route
Ensure that you keep evidence of both your:
- employment; and
- participation in your employer's development and appraisal processes.
We may confirm your CPD activity with your employer.
-
IFAC body route
Ensure that you keep:
- evidence of your membership of the other accountancy body;
- evidence of your participation in their CPD programme; and
- a copy of the outcome letter if they’ve reviewed your CPD record.
We may ask you for a copy of this letter or the records you’ve kept for the other professional body.
Recording tools and examples
We’ve developed a range of support to help you record your CPD activities, along with examples of the types of activity could count as verifiable or non-verifiable CPD.

How we review your CPD
We’re committed to ensuring that the highest professional and ethical standards are continually adhered to, safeguarding both our reputation and yours.
-
How are members selected?
We do this is by conducting annual reviews of a statistical sample of members' CPD to ensure they’re developing their knowledge and skills.
If you’re selected for review, we’ll provide constructive feedback on your CPD activities, along with any help needed to meet the requirement.
Members who don’t cooperate with the review process - for example by not responding to communications or failing to submit their CPD records - may be removed from the register of members.
-
What happens during the review process?
You'll be notified by email that you've been selected for a CPD review and you'll be instructed to submit your records via your myACCA account. Within the CPD Review submission page, you'll be given the option to provide details about the activities you carried out, upload records and/or supporting documents, or confirm that you've used the CPD evidence recording tool. You can provide your CPD records using one or more of these options. We'll be checking that you've met the CPD requirement for the route you're following.
Please make sure to submit your records within 28 days of receiving your notification email. Once you've submitted your records, the Professional Development team will review these records and contact you via your myACCA account with the outcome as well as any feedback.
When your review is complete, we’ll also ask you to complete a CPD activities questionnaire. This enables you to give us feedback on our CPD review process and the resources we provide to help you complete your CPD requirement.
-
What do I do if I’m chosen?
If you are chosen for a review of your CPD records, please read our 'CPD Review - instructions and guidance' which will assist you.
Applying for a CPD waiver
Who can apply for a waiver?
You should only apply for a waiver if you’re following our full unit route.
If you’re following our part-time or semi-retired route, you set your own CPD targets so there shouldn’t be any need for a waiver. Please do keep a record of any exceptional circumstances that prevent you from completing your verifiable CPD though.
-
Working for an ACCA approved employer
There shouldn’t be any need for you to apply for a waiver if you work for an ACCA Approved Employer - professional development. If you are on maternity leave, for example, we’d expect your employer to re-assess your development needs on returning to work.
-
IFAC body route
If you’re following the IFAC body route, please apply to the other IFAC body for a waiver if you need one.
-
Practising certificate/insolvency licence holders
If you hold a current practising certificate, insolvency licence or are on the ACCA register of practitioners, you can apply for a waiver, giving your reasons why.
Please note that if you are an Irish statutory auditor, you are unable to apply for a waiver. You must make good any shortfall you have within a reasonable time period.
For any questions regarding this, please contact Professional Development by opening a new case from your MyACCA portal.
-
Members not involved in public practice
If you’re not a practising member, you don’t need to provide your supporting documentation when applying for a waiver for the current year, but please hold onto it for three years just in case it’s needed.
If you’re applying for a waiver for a previous CPD year, we’ll ask you for supporting documentation when you apply.
You can apply for a CPD waiver from the Professional Development area of your MyACCA account.
How to apply for a CPD waiver
We realise that it isn’t always possible to meet your CPD requirement, so in exceptional circumstances we may grant a waiver.
Waivers are considered if you have been off work for at least one month.
Waivers for long-term and/or serious illness, maternity, paternity or adoption leave, unemployment or career breaks are granted pro rata to the length of absence.
If you have onerous caring duties, we may grant a waiver of seven verifiable units regardless of whether or not you’ve had an extended absence from work.
In each case, please tell us why you’re applying for a waiver and list the dates you were absent from work.
Please remember that you must keep documentary evidence to support your waiver application for three years.
-
Documents you'll need to apply for a waiver
If you hold a practising certificate, insolvency licence or are on the ACCA register of practitioners, you must submit your supporting evidence with your waiver application.
The documents we require to support your application will vary depending on your circumstances but some examples of what may be accepted are:
- A Tax Return
- Confirmation you receive some form of Government benefits
- Confirmation of your maternity/paternity/adoption leave or child’s birth certificate
- Letter of Termination from employer
- Confirmation of medical condition
- A document from your local tax office confirming no tax paid for the year
All supporting documentation should be officially translated into English.

Frequently asked questions
-
Who submits a declaration?
Every member* must submit an annual CPD declaration, no matter which CPD route you’re following. You must still submit a declaration even if you’ve been granted a waiver.
*The only exceptions are members on the lifetime members register and new members for their first year of membership.
-
When is the submission deadline?
You must submit your declaration by 1 January of the following year. If you do not submit your declaration then your membership will be at risk.

How do I complete my annual CPD declaration?

Once you have selected the year that you are making your declaration for; simply confirm:
- that you have/have not met the CPD requirement

- if you're an engagement partner responsible for audits of financial statements;
- that you’ve kept your professional ethics up to date.
-
What if I haven't been able to meet my CPD requirement?
If you’re having problems with your CPD, please let us know as soon as you can so we can help. You might be eligible for a different route or even a waiver, without realising it. You can use our CPD declaration help for tailored advice based on your situation.
