How to make sustainability work for your finance career

Discover what it takes to build a successful career at the intersection of finance and sustainability with the ACCA Professional Diploma in Sustainability.

Sustainability has moved from the margins of corporate reporting to the heart of financial decision-making.

A few years ago, environmental and social impact sat mostly in CSR teams. Today, sustainability in finance is an expectation, not an ambition.

Accountants and finance leaders are increasingly expected to understand ESG, climate risk, and ethical frameworks. Boards want clarity. Investors want comparable disclosures. Regulators want assurance. And organisations everywhere need people who can connect sustainability and accounting in a way that is strategic, ethical and evidence based.

This shift has created one of the most significant career opportunities the finance profession has seen in decades.

As sustainability reporting becomes mandatory across more markets, the demand for professionals with the right training and credibility is increasing at unprecedented speed.

Against this backdrop, ACCA has developed the Professional Diploma in Sustainability – a structured, globally-relevant learning pathway that combines four specialised certificates in key areas shaping the future of sustainable finance.

Whether you work in audit, reporting, analysis, management accounting, consulting or senior leadership, this diploma is designed to help you stay relevant, resilient and ready for the next era of finance.

Why sustainability skills are the new advantage in finance

Investors, regulators and stakeholders are making sustainability a core part of value creation. This trend has accelerated rapidly with the introduction of IFRS S1 and IFRS S2, sustainability assurance standard ISSA 5000, the corporate sustainability due-diligence movement, the EU’s sustainability reporting agenda, and growing expectations from banks, asset managers and consumers.

Sustainability is no longer a specialist niche. It is integral to:

  • long-term financial performance
  • risk management
  • strategic planning
  • investor confidence
  • resilience in a volatile global market

Finance teams are expected to understand sustainability reporting frameworks, measure ESG impact, translate sustainability risks into financial terms, and support organisational strategy with reliable data.

New career paths are opening up: sustainability reporting specialist, sustainability accounting, ESG analyst, sustainable finance manager, sustainability assurance practitioner, ESG consultant, and eventually, sustainability-led CFO and board-level roles.

Employers want people who can produce high-quality sustainability disclosures, ensure compliance, interpret emerging regulations and provide assurance over non-financial information.

Testimonials from people who have already undertaken ACCA’s sustainability certificates reflect the same message: sustainability skills have become essential.

Holly Runan Qian, financial controller at First Page, shares: ‘This learning journey has sharpened my ability to integrate sustainability into core financial decision-making – an increasingly vital area for finance professionals as we navigate evolving stakeholder expectations, regulations, and long-term value creation.’

Kelvin Chow, CEO at EC World REIT, echoes the strategic importance: ‘This course has been invaluable in helping me translate organisational sustainability goals into actionable business strategies and policies.’

What is the ACCA Professional Diploma in Sustainability?

The Professional Diploma in Sustainability (ProDipSust) is ACCA’s flagship sustainability qualification designed specifically for finance professionals. It provides a professional, practical and globally relevant foundation across the full sustainability landscape – reporting, assurance, ethics, frameworks and strategy.

It is self-paced, fully online and accessible to anyone – no ACCA membership required.

The diploma consists of four certificates, each of which can be taken individually or collectively:

  1. Sustainability Assurance
  2. Sustainability Reporting
  3. Sustainability Frameworks and Ethics
  4. Sustainability Strategy and Management

The programme blends global best practice – including IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, ethical principles, strategic concepts, and real-world case studies – with applied learning that helps professionals contribute immediately in their roles.

As Ms Huong, director at Vietnam’s State Audit Office, emphasises: ‘The course content is highly relevant and reflects global best practice in sustainability reporting and management. The modules effectively cover the ethical frameworks, strategic alignment, assurance services, and disclosure standards needed in the current and future landscape.’

This relevance is what sets the diploma apart: it’s built for the future of the finance profession.

The four courses that bring sustainability to life in finance

A core requirement of sustainable finance careers is breadth – professionals must understand:

  • Reporting
  • Ethics
  • Assurance
  • Frameworks
  • Strategy

Each certificate brings a specific skillset essential for building your capability.

With mandatory sustainability reporting emerging worldwide, the demand for sustainability assurance is rising sharply. Organisations need credible, consistent and reliable ESG disclosures, and assurance professionals are critical to building trust.

This certificate will teach you how to:

  • explore laws, regulations, standards and ethical considerations governing sustainability assurance
  • learn the steps involved in conducting a sustainability assurance engagement, including evaluating auditor's assurance, planning engagements, and assessing challenges
  • stay updated on the latest standards and regulations in the field of sustainability assurance

Career impact: Learners gain a strong foundation aligned with global assurance expectations – an asset particularly valuable for auditors, finance controllers, internal auditors and ESG leads.

Sustainability reporting is one of the most in-demand skills in modern finance. For context, the EU’s Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) will expand mandatory sustainability reporting from around 11,700 companies under the old non-financial reporting directive to about 50,000 companies in Europe – more than a fourfold increase in scope.

While as of June 2025, 36 jurisdictions have adopted, are using, or are in the process of introducing the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards (ISSB Standards) into their regulatory frameworks.

Around 90% of S&P 500 companies now publish ESG or sustainability reports, many focusing specifically on climate-related impacts and risks. In PwC’s Global Sustainability Reporting Survey 2025, 66% of companies said they had increased the resources devoted to sustainability reporting in the past year, and 65% increased senior leadership time on it; only about 6% said they were reducing investment.

Companies must deliver transparent, decision-useful information that aligns with emerging standards and investor expectations.

This certificate will help you:

  • learn the steps involved in preparing a sustainability report, including setting frameworks, collecting data, and reporting
  • gain a deep understanding of IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, climate-related disclosures, and greenhouse gas emissions measurement
  • explore the interactions between the IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards and European Sustainability Reporting Standards
  • learn how to analyse sustainability reportings from an investor's perspective, assess their benefits and costs, and understand their impact on stakeholders
  • explore the interconnectedness between sustainability reporting and financial statements, and analyse the impact of climate change on financial statement components

Nguyen Cam Chi, trainer at MCG Management Consulting, praises the clarity and structure: ‘The course provided a very comprehensive and structured overview of different sustainability reporting frameworks. The interactive materials clarified all my questions about choosing the most appropriate reporting framework in practice.’

Career impact: This certificate is ideal for accountants, financial analysts, risk managers, reporting specialists and anyone involved in compiling ESG disclosures.

Ethics is the cornerstone of sustainability reporting and sustainable finance. The frameworks guiding this work – global standards, ethical codes, international principles – are critical for responsible decision-making.

This certificate explores:

  • the definition of sustainability and sustainable development
  • the concept of a sustainable business model
  • how various frameworks, guidance and regulatory bodies interact with organisations
  • the need for adaptability due to the rapid pace of change of sustainability regulations
  • evaluation of threats to ethical principles in relation to sustainability

Aruni Rajakarier, director at SLID, highlights why this certificate matters: ‘I strongly recommend accounting and finance professionals invest in this course, as it provides practical insights into implementing sustainability reporting and demonstrates how we can apply tools and techniques we learned as accountants.’

Career impact: This learning is highly recommended for practitioners advising on ESG compliance, reporting, governance and strategic alignment.

Sustainability strategy is now core to business competitiveness. For example, the UK’s net zero economy, which includes sectors such as renewable energy and green finance, is growing around three times faster than the wider economy and already generates more than £80bn a year in value, with nearly a million jobs that pay well above the national average.

And allaying concerns that sustainability might dent the bottom line, a large meta-analysis of over 2,000 academic studies found that about 90% report a non-negative relationship between ESG performance and financial performance, with most showing a positive link – hard evidence that sustainability and profitability are not in conflict.

Finance teams are therefore increasingly expected to embed sustainability into governance, decision-making and long-term planning.

This certificate teaches professionals:

  • to align organisational goals with sustainability commitments and identify key resources and relationships
  • the importance of effective governance, risk management, and internal controls in ensuring sustainable operations
  • how to make informed business, financial, and investment decisions that prioritise sustainability
  • to set and monitor targets, KPIs, and metrics to track environmental and social impact
  • the role of technology in supporting sustainability reporting, scenario analysis, and impact assessment

The feedback from finance leaders is consistently strong.

Jason Ang, senior advisor at Castlery, says: ‘This course focuses on planning, governance, risk and decision-making. It is ideal for finance leaders looking to expand their knowledge of sustainability, apply it at their workplace and make a real impact.’

Career impact: This certificate is relevant for those who aspire to influence business direction, strengthen their leadership potential and unlock long-term organisational value.

How the diploma accelerates your career growth

Professionals who complete all four of the certificates often describe it as transformational. It builds the capabilities organisations now expect from high-performing finance professionals and provides a clear route into emerging areas of work.

Deloitte’s 2024 sustainability/ESG survey reports that 98% of executives say they made progress on their sustainability goals in the last year, and notes the rise of cross-functional ESG working groups and new roles like Chief Sustainability Officer and ESG controller, indicating active hiring to meet reporting and data demands.

Meanwhile, the LinkedIn Green Skills Report 2025 found that growth in green hiring is almost 2x faster than growth in the share of workers with green skills (7.7% vs 4.3%), and green talent is far more likely to secure a job, getting hired at a global rate 46.6% above the economy-wide hiring rate.

Essentially, green, sustainable, ESG skills equal more hiring, new roles, and direct demand for accountants who can handle sustainability data, assurance, governance and reporting.

Here’s how the diploma supports career development.

Professionals with sustainability expertise report higher employer interest, more strategic responsibilities and faster progression into advisory and leadership roles.

Rosemary Catherine King in Australia has this to share about the diploma: ‘I wanted a sustainability qualification especially designed for accountants. The Professional Diploma in Sustainability has met all my expectations.’

As sustainability becomes a driver of long-term value, finance teams that understand it gain more influence in decision-making.

Kelvin Chow summarises it well: ‘These insights strengthen my ability to drive meaningful sustainability initiatives and contribute to building more responsible, future-ready organisations.’
