A summary of our recent correspondence around phishing attacks

Following HMRC’s appearance in front of the Treasury Select Committee where it disclosed a phishing attack impacting personal accounts (see our earlier article), ACCA wrote to the Treasury Select Committee.
In his remarks following the committee’s question about the release of the statement on gov.uk regarding the breach of personal accounts, the First Permanent Secretary said that HMRC had worked with agent and representative bodies in the new year. We notified the committee that we had not discussed this incident with HMRC and were unaware of it until it became public on 4 June.
The Committee were interested to receive our letter and have since published it on their website alongside further evidence from HMRC and a letter from the committee chair, Dame Meg Hillier MP. All are available in the Correspondence section of the Committee’s website.
We had taken the opportunity to also raise the poor experience of agents when dealing with HMRC using data we have collected from members over several intervals in the last two years. We would like to thank all members who contribute to these regular surveys and who keep us informed of the impact of their dealings with HMRC. This is just one example of the ways we use your feedback.
