ACCA’s continued commitment to advancing sustainability reporting globally is embraced by a coordinated multistakeholder approach in Africa – where close collaboration and the adoption of international standards boost the continent’s shared ambition.
The Sustainability Working Group Africa (SWGA) initiative was established as a public affairs outreach, following recommendations from the 2023 Africa Members Convention – in alignment with the Pan African Federation of Accountants (PAFA) Centre of Excellence, to achieve our mutual objectives.
While reporting on sustainability-related efforts is not new to Africa, the launch of the International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards in 2023 marked a pivotal point in the continent’s sustainability reporting journey. At CoP 27 in November 2022, Nigeria formally declared its intent to adopt the ISSB standards – leading the train of first movers on the continent.
Through the SWGA initiative, ACCA, in collaboration with regulators and adopters across Africa – aims to achieve three core objectives:

Working together, we capture a series of country insights – drawn from adopters and regional experts across Africa – using a case-study approach hinged on ACCA’s Sustainability reporting: The Guide to preparation, which covers:
- The current realities of adopters as they build awareness and capacity.
- Good practices and lessons from early adopters to encourage and showcase success stories.
- Key challenges and opportunities faced by adopters – highlighting areas for advocacy and potential policy interventions.
