In challenging economic times, accountants may come under pressure to do the wrong thing. This is evident from a recent incident where the ex-CFO of a crude oil products supplier was convicted and received nine years of imprisonment for helping defraud eight banks of $424m.

EP 100 Code of Professional Conduct and Ethics was revised on 14 August 2020 to adopt the final pronouncements relating to the Restructured Code and Revisions to the Code Pertaining to the Offering and Accepting of Inducements issued by IESBA. This revised ethical pronouncement is effective as of 1 March 2021.

Ong Woon Pheng FCCA, director of financial advisory services, PKF-CAP Advisory Partners

Woon Pheng has been in the accounting and finance profession since 2001 and he is currently director of the financial advisory services department at PKF-CAP, a member firm of PKF International. He was previously with Kudos CAS and RSM Nelson Wheeler, which are members of global accounting networks.

He is a fellow member of ACCA, chartered accountant of Singapore (CA Singapore), chartered financial analyst (CFA), international certified valuation specialist (ICVS), certified fraud examiner (CFE) and accredited tax practitioner (ATP income tax).

Currently, he specialises in business valuation, valuation for FRS (including purchase price allocation, impairment review and valuation of complex financial instruments), financial and tax due diligence, mergers and acquisitions advisory, fraud investigation, assessment of damages and expert witness.

As an adjunct faculty of Singapore University of Social Science (formerly known as UniSIM), University of Portsmouth, Murdoch University and Kaplan, Woon Pheng teaches business valuation, financial reporting and corporate finance-related subjects for the Masters, CFA, degree and diploma programmes. In 2015, he was conferred the teaching merit award by SUSS. He is also involved in various roles in the Singapore CA Qualification and with Singapore Accountancy Commission.
