Overview:

This income tax webinar takes place approximately two weeks after John Healey's first Budget, providing an early opportunity to examine the measures announced and their practical implications.

Some income tax increases have already been scheduled for 2027-28, including changes affecting landlords. Further increases may also be considered as the government led by Andy Burnham looks for ways to fund its policy commitments.

The webinar will cover:

  • The principal income tax measures announced in the Budget and their effect on individuals and businesses.
  • Changes taking effect in the next tax year, including measures announced previously.
  • Mid-year and year-end tax planning opportunities, with practical points for advisers and taxpayers.
  • New information requirements for self-assessment returns and the additional disclosures taxpayers may need to make.
  • HMRC initiatives to reduce the income tax gap, including developments in compliance activity, data use and enforcement.

Speaker: Jeremy Mindell

The periodic review amendments to UK and Ireland accounting standards have begun to take effect. This session will focus on the latest developments in these key areas, such as:

  • Technical issues relating to on-balance sheet lease accounting
  • Technical issues relating to the five-step revenue recognition model
  • Disclosure issues for small entities in the UK
  • Key differences between FRS 102 and FRS 105 and how to transition to/from each standard
  • Further updates and developments in legislation and accounting standards

Comprehensive course material will be made available for this session.

Speaker: Steve Collings

Overview:

Multiple and severe ongoing uncertainties threatening business and economic stability make it critical that we turn our focus towards identifying risks that will impact us and creating and applying strategies that are more resilient in the face of these. The residual effects of the financial crisis of 2007/8, Brexit, and Covid-19 still linger economically. Now we have the existential threats of the Ukraine War, Middle Eastern conflict, U.S. foreign and trade policy, Russian expansionism and domestic political upheaval are the most obvious major events creating economic and business disruption and will resonate for years to come. Yet there are other threats and uncertainties that must be considered – environment and climate change, increasing intensity of competition, shifts in government policy, changing consumer trends and rapid technological change all represent real risks to stability but also offer opportunities to those businesses who are well prepared with robust and nimble strategies.

Key features:

  • What is business resilience?
  • The principal threats and risks and their impacts that threaten business resilience
    • Economic
    • Global and domestic political factors
    • Technological
    • Competitive
    • Environmental, health and social
  • Conducting effective economic, competitive and PEST analysis and acting upon them
  • Understanding our competitive advantages and building upon these to create resilience
  • The importance of scenario planning and flexibility in our business planning

Speaker: John McKenzie

Overview:

Since December 2022, all audit-registered firms have had to develop, maintain and use a system of quality management, as required by ISQM (UK) 1. This presents a big challenge for smaller firms – but is something that professional bodies will review carefully on inspection visits. This session will refresh on ISQM (UK) 1’s key requirements and provide practical guidance on how to apply it in a small practice. Topics covered will include:

  • Developing and evolving a proportionate risk assessment
  • Policies and procedures – not too much; not too little
  • What monitoring and remediation actually looks like in a smaller firm
  • The annual evaluation
  • How ISQM 1 compliance links with the annual audit compliance review

Speaker: Peter Herbert
