Session 2: VAT in academies

Academies may operate under a unique VAT framework. Equally, they may have a normal VAT registration. This session will help you navigate exemptions, partial recoveries, and compliance challenges specific to academies. You’ll gain insight into the VAT treatment of grants, services, facilities, and ancillary income. Using real-world examples, you’ll leave with knowledge to minimize risk and ensure compliance. 

Course Outline:

·       Overview of VAT rules applicable to academies be it VAT registration or Section 33B

·       Treatment of government grants and funding

·       Partial VAT recovery rules and practical examples including capital goods scheme overview

·       VAT treatment of ancillary services and trading activities

Common compliance pitfalls and HMRC focus areas

Simone Hurst

 

Simone Hurst is an accomplished speaker and VAT consultant of many years standing. She began her VAT career as the youngest ever direct entrant Executive Officer in HM Customs & Excise working as a VAT Inspector before moving on to manage an in-house VAT practice for a firm of accountants in Yorkshire and then working for one of the Big 4 firms. She now runs her own independent VAT practice, and has done for 26 years, dealing with every sort of VAT query you can possibly think of.
