What was your first job?

My first job was as an audit assistant at the Deloitte & Touche Lusaka office in Zambia in February 1993, two months after my O-level examinations. My father encouraged me to take this job so that I could make an informed decision about really wanting to be an accountant. Fortunately, the senior partner at the time was a family friend, so I got the opportunity to have a ‘feel’ of what was involved even before I had heard of debits and credits.

How has ACCA membership helped your career?

It has helped my career a great deal because of the interaction with many other fellow ACCA members and, of course, the continuous support and education from ACCA even though it is some 10 years since I passed my exams.

How do you use your accountancy skills in running your business?

I ensure that our accounting system is up to scratch. In addition, I use my skills in forecasting, planning, modelling, and overall strategy and direction of the firm.

What do you do in your spare time?

I love to play golf, watch sport, and read accounting and other journals.

Do you have further career ambitions?

One day I would like to be at the helm of the largest consulting practice in the world. It might sound like a long shot but I am sure within 10 years we shall get there.

What advice would you give students wanting to rise to the top?

Soldier on, make the best of your career, and make the accountancy profession proud of you.
